 Creativity was celebrated at a recent showcase event in Watch House Cross Community Centre which involved Art Groups from across Limerick city. Learners from Our Lady of Lourdes, Temperance Hall , Thomondgate ,  Limerick Social Services Centre  , St. John’s parish,  Garryowen and Northside FRC were all involved in an event that succeeded in bringing together people from across the city.

These stories of every woman were powerfully performed in 69 O’Connell Street (formerly Belltable Arts Centre), as part of the 16 days of action against violence against women. The script was written and performed by Clare Higgins, Margaret Fitzgerald, Claire Sadlier, Frances O'Brien, Clare Dollard and Noelene Nash aka 'Limerick Women Warriors'.
VTOS Students in Limerick City Adult Education Service raise €700 in aid of Philippines Relief

Minster Cannon becomes honorary member of Southill Men’s Shed!

Ciaran Cannon Minister for Training & Skills at the Department of Education & Skills was presented with the official tie and made an honorary member of Southill Men’s Shed at a conference in All Hallows College in Dublin recently!  The conference marked the completion of the European VITA project involving 10 countries which focused on the validation of non-formal learning. The Minister presented certificates to 10 member of Southill Men’s Shed who were involved in the project.

Students on a Back to Education Initiative (BTEI) programme with LCAES who are participating in a Certificate in Catering Support  (QQI Level 4 – Part time). This 18 month programme, which includes modules such as Kitchen Skills, Meal Service, Short Order Cooking as well as Customer Service, Communications and Work Experience, will qualify and prepare these people for much needed jobs in the Catering and Hospitality sector in the Limerick area.
Community Addiction Studies Course - Presentation of Certificates to LCAES learners

VTOS Celebrate Intercultural Day

On Thursday 16th May the Limerick City Adult Education Service VTOS College celebrated their Intercultural Day with a festival of events held at Perys Hotel Limerick. VTOS Limerick City Intercultural Day serves to highlight the diversity and culture of all the different nationalities that participate on VTOS courses. It was a great day and wonderful to see students and staff working together to make this a unique and truly enjoyable occasion.

LCAES Learners visit Paris-the VTOS Art Trip 2013

Seventeen VTOS art students recently travelled on a cultural trip to Paris organised by art teacher, Jayne Foley.   Financed by the students themselves, it was an amazing trip with visits to the most famous sights of the city including Notre Dame Cathedral, Montmartre, the Champs Elysées and the Eiffel Tower.  The highlight was a visit to the Salvador Dali exhibition at the Pompidou Centre as well as the Musée d’Orsay on the left bank of the Seine.  The students took some fantastic photos, using their digital photography skills to great effect!  All agreed that travelling abroad as a community of learners was a wonderful opportunity – one they will never forget.
 
Nurturing Wellbeing in Adult Learning

On March 22nd, 110 staff from all across Limerick City Adult Education Service took part in ‘Nurturing Wellbeing in Adult Teaching and Learning’ a CPD event that was held as part of Limerick’s Lifelong Learning Festival 2013. The purpose of the event was to raise awareness of the importance of wellbeing and positive mental health in the adult learning environment and to share practical approaches for building resilience-both our own and that of learners.

To celebrate the conclusion of a 5 week ‘Confidence-Building for Learning’ course, a group of adult learners from LCAES went to the University of Limerick.  This course is one of a range of new ‘First Step’ programmes launched last November 2012 by Minister Joan Burton.  The aim of these courses is to encourage learners to take their first steps back into education.

After a year of hard work, a big congratulations goes out to VTOS Art Craft and Design students, Kamil Parzych, Brian O’Donovan, Olga Karpova, Jackie Duhig and Edel O'Callaghan on being accepted for the degree course at Limerick College of Art and Design.  Well done also to all the staff teaching on the programme!  The annual showcase of learners' art works will take place on the morning of 1st of June.  All are welcome.

A television crew recently came to the Limerick Adult Education College on Sexton Street to film VTOS student Ali Almousawi from Iraq.  Ali is currently taking part in a documentary about his new life in Ireland, including his participation in Adult Education.  The documentary will be screened on RTE in June.
VTOS Cultural Trip To Rome 2012

50 students from Limerick City Adult Education Service's VTOS programme paid a weekend visit to Rome in March.  It was a unique experience in an amazing City.  Our walking tours took in most of the famous historical landmarks including the beautiful Piazzas, the Colosseum, the Vatican, the Sistine Chapel and Trevi Fountain.  To see the ancient history and culture of Rome at first hand was an extraordinary learning opportunity, never to be forgotten.

Over 100 people attended the launch recently of an important research report on ‘The Social Value of Community-Based Adult Education in Limerick City. The report was commissioned by LCAES, Limerick Community Education Network (LCEN), and Limerick Regeneration Agency and was carried out by a research team from the Sociology Dept. at UL.

The inaugural meeting for a European project on the recognition of prior learning (RPL) in vocational education and training (VET) was recently co-hosted by Mary Immaculate College and Limerick City Adult Education Service on the 19th and 20th January. The project aims to compare VET systems in partner countries, share knowledge on the use of RPL and prepare documentation on a range of issues, including the potential of ECVET (European Credit System for Vocational Education and Training) for supporting RPL.

Participants in four LCAES Community Education Irish classes across the city recently joined forces to put together a unique Irish calendar celebrating the beauty of the Limerick city landscape and the grá that exists here for our national language.  Groups of adult learners from Our Lady Queen of Peace, Southill Gael Scoil, St. Munchins FRC and the Social Service Centre worked together on this collaborative project.

Limerick City Adult Education Service (LCAES) will launch its Report ‘Evaluation of the effectiveness and impact of the Community Addiction Studies Course (CASC©) in Limerick City’ on Thursday December 8th 2011.  This study of CASC© in Limerick is only the third evaluation to be conducted on accredited drugs education in Ireland and is a first for Limerick.  The Report highlights the critical role that local communities and local people have to play in tackling problems of drugs misuse.

World famous authors, with over 50 million sales to their name, joined forces with Limerick city students to produce a unique literacy and enterprise project. “Different Voices” is a collection of writings, artwork, and photography that was created to highlight the importance of reading and writing for young people, as well as raising funds to support the work of Barnardo’s children’s charity.

As part of the annual literacy drive Youthreach O’Connell Avenue has recently published a literary and art anthology titled ‘Different Voices’. This project is aimed at highlighting the possibilities for literacy amongst Youthreach learners. We are also using this opportunity to develop a local community literacy and enterprise project promoting literacy awareness, as well as allowing learners to experience an enterprise project and the challenges involved in developing and selling a product.

A Limerick Minute is a series of short films produced by people of Limerick. Throughout 2010, documentary filmmaker Christina Gangos taught and mentored learners from Community Based Adult Education Centres across Limerick in the art of observational documentary. The outcome presents diverse approaches of exploring Limerick through a camera lens.
New EGF Photography Course Announced

Due to popular demand FETAC Level 5 Digital Photography is being re-run in LCAES for all adults eligible for EGF funding.  Course begins Friday April 29th from 9:30am to 4:30pm and runs every Friday over seven weeks.  This course is free to all those eligible for EGF funding.  Eligibility clearance will be sought from the EGF Co-ordination Unit prior to course start up.

The new and innovative purpose-built facility, managed by Darragh Droog, hosted 11 teams from all over the country who displayed fantastic sportsmanship, over four hours of soccer mania!

Grotto Project Wins STAR Award

On Monday the 22nd of February at the National Aontas STAR Awards held in Dublin, participants and staff involved in the Grotto Project on Childers’ Road were presented with a ‘Highly Commended’ STAR Award to recognise the achievements of the group.

Thursday 25th February saw eighteen participants graduate from the Community Addiction Studies Course (CASC) programme organised and supported by Limerick City AES. The graduation ceremony for the FETAC Level 5 Component Certificate in Community Addiction Studies Course 2009 was held in the Greenhills Hotel.
OUT exhibition visits Limerick

Following a well reviewed and highly successful exhibition in Kilmainham Gaol the ‘OUT’ National Prison Education art exhibition has moved to The Hunt Museum in Limerick. The exhibition is the culmination of artistic work created by prisoners from prisons throughout Ireland, including some magnificent pieces created by participants from Limerick.

VTOS Concert a great success

The VTOS Christmas concert was an outstanding success and undoubtedly the best multi-cultural event in town!  With a wide variety of acts, compèred by Frank Noonan, the show kicked off with the staff performance of ABBA in full 1970’s gear.  Jayne Foley’s Arts group stole the show with their superb performance of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’.  Their act was stunning in terms of costume, dance and choreography.
