Limerick City Adult Education Service (LCAES) recently marked the retirement of three of its longest serving volunteer adult literacy tutors while also welcoming over 40 new tutors to the fold.

At an event held on Tuesday 14th December, Irene Barry, Marie Breen and Charlotte Touhy were honoured for over 50 years commitment to voluntary tutoring between them.
At the event, over 40 new recruits also celebrated completing their Initial Volunteer Tutor Training programme over the last weeks and are now fully trained and ready to begin their journey as members of the tutoring staff with Basic Education Solutions.
On the night, the group heard from Mr. Michael Power, the current chairperson of NALA, the National Adult Literacy Agency. Michael, himself an adult learner who returned to education after leaving school early, spoke vividly of his motivation for returning to learning and of his experiences since doing so.  In congratulating the tutors on completing their training he also advised them on the importance of their role in making sure that adults do come back to education while reminded them of the potential for volunteer tutors to influence the lives of our learners.
Volunteer tutors working with Limerick City Adult Education service assist the work of the Service by providing one-to-one individual tutoring, helping to run book clubs, improve basic literacy skills using subject areas such as ICT and art and crafts, act as classroom assistants in group classes and support students by assisting them with homework between group classes. Currently LCAES has over 1000 learners attending basic education classes throughout the city a number which has grown by over 20% year-on-year over the last number of years. It is expected that numbers accessing services will again increase in 2010.
