OUT exhibition visits Limerick
12/03/2010 00:00:00

Following a well reviewed and highly successful exhibition in Kilmainham Gaol the ‘OUT’ National Prison Education art exhibition has moved to The Hunt Museum in Limerick. The exhibition is the culmination of artistic work created by prisoners from prisons throughout Ireland, including some magnificent pieces created by participants from Limerick.

The works on display in the exhibition cover a broad variety of art forms including paintings, drawings, sculpture, lino prints, mosaic, jewellery, photography, video and pottery.

The Education Unit in Limerick Prison is part of the Limerick Adult Education Service and offers a variety of full and part-time accredited programmes for learners from basic education Junior And Leaving Cert to Open University studies for a variety of degrees, including at masters level.

Art, craft and design courses are an integral part of the curriculum in each of the Education Units and as well as regular classes the Arts Council and the Irish Prison Service jointly fund the ‘Artist in Prison’ scheme.  This offers learners the chance to work with professional artists to develop proficiency in a particular specialisms.

Persons in prison engage with the arts in Prison, for a variety of reasons. For many it will facilitate formalising of skills learned previously, for others it may be their first opportunity to work in this area. The attainment of knowledge, skills, and certification, is an integral outcome of participation in the arts programmes but as important are the development of core skills such working on one’s own initiative and as part of a team, planning, problems solving, patience and reflection.

Particular thanks for their hard work is due to Paula Rafferty and Emer Toomey, both teachers in the Arts Department in Limerick Prison and to Veronica Hoen who is the Arts Development Officer with the Irish Prison Service.

We would encourage everyone to attend this exhibition to see some of wonderful work on display.  OUT runs from 25th of February –21st of March, in the Hunt Museum www.huntmuseum.com/
