Minster Cannon becomes honorary member of Southill Men’s Shed!

Ciaran Cannon Minister for Training & Skills at the Department of Education & Skills was presented with the official tie and made an honorary member of Southill Men’s Shed at a conference in All Hallows College in Dublin recently!  The conference marked the completion of the European VITA project involving 10 countries which focused on the validation of non-formal learning. The Minister presented certificates to 10 member of Southill Men’s Shed who were involved in the project.

Southill Men’s Shed is a group of over 30 men who came together over 2 years ago, the group meet up to three times a week and so far have completed courses in woodwork, cookery, fitness and health. Their involvement in the European VITA project was a new departure for the group. With the support of LCAES Community Education Tutor Tracy Aspel they piloted a tool for validating non-formal learning. For this project the group chose the competences of leadership, networking and organisational skills and through VITA’s LEVEL 5 validation system were recognised for their skills in these areas. 

Minster Cannon spoke of the importance of Men’s Sheds in Ireland which are growing rapidly.  There are currently over 170 sheds in Ireland all of which actively support the engagement of men at a community level.  The Minster spoke about the importance of men coming together talking to each other whilst also developing new skills and interests. 

In addition to their scheduled courses, the Southill Men’s Shed group meets  every Thurs morning to ‘check in’ with its members, group members identify this as a very important element of the group which provides a social outlet and emotional support to its members as well as completing a range of classes and course.
