Limerick City AES pilots two innovative new projects
12/11/2010 00:00:00

Limerick City Adult Education Service is currently piloting two exciting new projects - an Irish Aid funded ‘Development Education Project’ and a community-based initiative called ‘Capturing the Wider Benefits of Learning’.

LCAES Development Education Project explores issues of inequality and injustice which lie at the heart of the uneven distribution of power, wealth and resources in the world today.  The aim of this project is to embed an exploration of Development Education issues in current LCAES learning programmes.  Community Education and Basic Education Solutions tutors are participating in the project and will complete a number of training sessions by January 2010.

Through promoting active citizenship and comparing development issues and challenges in Ireland with that elsewhere LCAES hopes to build an international and human rights perspective into learning programmes. The Development Education project was launched on the 8th September 2010 at the Community Based Tutors meeting, at which Colm Regan from 80:20 gave a thought provoking presentation on global issues in a local context.

Capturing the Wider Benefits of Learning is an initiative being piloted by LCAES Community Education tutors, in 43 different courses running in community venues right across the city. The pilot involves the use of a new Self Assessment Tool. This tool is designed to rate learners’ progress towards achieving learning outcomes and also to record evidence of the wide range of other impacts which result from participation in community-based learning courses.

It is hoped that the tool will provide learners with the opportunity to reflect on their learning and also to record vital data about the impact of Community Education.  The pilot concludes in December.
