Launch of Knowing your Community in Southill

The Southside Women’s Group recently held a launch to celebrate their achievements on completing a course entitled ‘Knowing your Community’.  Local Councillor Orla McLoughlin was on hand to officiate at the launch in Southill Junior School.

Knowing your Community is a LCAES Community Education course which aims to promote and support active citizenship at community level. Delivered through a multi -tutor approach by Anita Martin, Eibhlis Bray and Mary Immaculate College Adult Education student Richard Hannafin. The course begins with a focus on the personal to enable people gain confidence and find their voice and moves on to a community focus allowing participants explore issues which affect them and their community and the final sessions focus on using an artistic medium to profile the community.

Anita Martin the LCAES Community Education tutor who facilitated the initial section of the course said the Southside Women’s Group who have been together over 3 years have ‘huge enthusiasm for working for change for the community’.  The group who have completed courses in the past in personal development and photography and are always open to new members.

Richard Hannafin who facilitated the artistic element of the project felt the course allowed the learners ‘to discuss the various positives and negatives of their community and hopes for the future of Southill in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. 
The culmination of the course was a collaborative picture containing personal photographs, writings, letters and other memorabilia. The finished piece depicted the issues discussed by the group over the duration of the course.
