04/04/2012 00:00:00

A delegation from the Adult Education Service recently visited Norway as part of a European project on Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). The project shares knowledge on procedures and practices of RPL across the EU and explores the potential of ECVET (European Credit System for Vocational Education and Training).

The second meeting held in Oslo on 26th and 27th March 2012 featured presentations on national models used to recognise prior learning of VET teachers and trainers. These highlighted the benefits and challenges arising in countries which have years of experience implementing RPL policies and procedures. In particular, the experience in Norway and France provided much food for thought as they presented models of RPL which have been operational for some time. From an Irish perspective, Mary Hamilton, AEO made a presentation on the changing competence requirements for VET professionals, whilst Cathal DePaor from Mary Immaculate College detailed the Irish RPL policy context and how RPL is beginning to be impemented at third level. The project entitled RIPLVET (Recognition of Prior Learning in Vocational Education and Training) is funded as part of the European Commission's Lifelong Learning Programme Leonardo. The projects website will be launched shortly.
