LCAES Youthreach Literacy Week 2013
12/12/2013 00:00:00

In Youthreach O’Connell Avenue, we pride ourselves in placing literacy at the top of our agenda. Every year we hold an annual literacy awareness week to highlight the importance of literacy amongst our students.

This year’s events ran from November 4th to 8th and our chosen theme was Oral literacy. By choosing the theme of Oral literacy the students got the opportunity to participate in drama, story-telling through song, and read their own stories in a storytelling event. There was a number of drama workshops organised where our Leaving Certificate group performed a play they wrote themselves entitled my Sister’s Dress which is a modern day depiction of the life of Frank McCourt. Another very successful event that took place during the week was a sing-a-long in the canteen led by two of teachers where they sang songs based on heartrending stories such as The Gambler and The Travelling Soldier.

The highlight of the week’s events was a visit from internationally renowned writer Darren Shan.  Youthreach students from 5th and 6th got the chance to read their own stories for Darren Shan and they received a fantastic reception. Youthreach student Emma Ryan presented Darren Shan with an original artwork she based on the characters in his book The Demonata. The event was organised by the centre’s Literacy Co-ordinator Roisin Cleary and supported by all the centre’s staff and students.
