The Childer’s Road Traveller Group Grotto Refurbishment Project, a Limerick City AES (LCAES) collaborative project, has been nominated for a prestigious Aontas Star Award.

The project, which ran throughout 2009 on the Childer’s Road halting site, set out to refurbish the on-site grotto, while providing participants with an opportunity to learn many critical core skills in the process.  Margaret O’ Reilly, one of the participants said “this grotto is very important to me, my mother and our family. It makes a great difference to the site”.

The project was a collaborative inter-agency effort, as part of the Limerick City Interagency Traveller Initiative. It  was lead by two LCAES programmes (Basic Education Solutions and Community Education) with other key players including the traveller group themselves who led the direction and focus of the project, Limerick City Council, the HSE, the Department of Education and the Department of Social & Family Affairs.

Every year, Aontas, which is the national adult learning body, celebrates projects and initiatives with an adult learning focus and a focus on innovation and team-work through their Showcasing Teamwork Awarding Recognition (STAR) awards. This year, the Grotto Project is one of three finalists nominated for a regional Aontas STAR award in Munster.

The final winner will be announced in Dublin on Monday February 22nd.
