Grotto Project Wins STAR Award
25/03/2010 00:00:00

On Monday the 22nd of February at the National Aontas STAR Awards held in Dublin, participants and staff involved in the Grotto Project on Childers’ Road were presented with a ‘Highly Commended’ STAR Award to recognise the achievements of the group.

Every year as part of the Aontas Adult Learners’ Festival, the STAR Awards have been awarded for outstanding, learner-centred adult and community education projects demonstrating a commitment to collaboration and partnership. The Grotto Project, which was the work of the Childers’ Road Travellers Group in partnership with Limerick City Adult Education Service programmes (Basic Education Solutions and Community Education) set out to refurbish the 16 year old grotto on the family site and completed this project with amazing results including the integration of Literacy, Numeracy and Personal Development.
The Highly Commended award was proudly accepted by two of the participants representing the group, Ann O’ Neill and Eileen Hartnett (pictured below) and the award will be displayed in the resource room on Childers’ Road, which is a site-based facility currently used as a learning centre for families living on the site involved in adult education. The room is also used as and a homework club for parents and children.
The next step for the group is a horticultural summer project commencing after Easter which will cover areas like gardening, growing vegetables / herbs, natural remedies and a trip to another similar project. This project again will integrate the core literacy, numeracy and personal development skills.
