Basic Skills Campaign Launched
22/09/2009 00:00:00

A new Campaign has been launched to encourage Adults to improve their Reading, Writing and Maths Skills. It involves a mail drop to 65,000 homes during National Adult Literacy Week which commenced on Monday 21st September.

The campaign, sponsored by An Post encourages adults to ‘take the first step’ to improve their reading, writing and maths skills. It was launched on Monday 21 September in the GPO. Developed in association with the National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA), the literacy awareness drive will see An Post staff delivering information leaflets to over 65,000 homes across the country.  Pictured above at the Launch are AES Learner Patrick Buckley, Lorraine Markham ALO, Donal Connell (CEO An Post) and AES Learner Paddy Collins.

Speaking about the campaign, Colin Cummins, Adult Literacy Organiser at Limerick City Adult Education Service said "We are very excited about this An Post sponsored campaign and we hope that people from right across Limerick City who would like to return to education will be encouraged to give us a call. The courses we run are designed for people who for work or personal reasons would like to improve their reading, writing, maths or basic IT skills.  We tailor our courses to meet the needs of our learners and so everyone can learn at a pace that suits them in a friendly and welcoming environment. People join our classes for many different reasons and so we design our courses specifically for adults who may be returning to education for the first time in quite a while.   The most important thing for us is to make sure that if you would like to improve your reading, writing, maths or IT skills we can provide you with a course to meet your needs. That's why this campaign is so important - it helps to get the message out there that there is a free and confidential service that can help."

The Take the first step information leaflets contain course options and contact details for local VEC adult literacy services. There are courses from ‘complete beginners’ to ‘improvers’ in reading, writing, spelling, maths and computers. Small group or one-to-one tuition is available in a friendly and relaxed environment. It is completely free and confidential. For More Detail Go to http://www.limerickcityaes.ie/Adult-Basic-Education.aspx
