Generic/Transferable Skills

In recent years global, EU and national level policies have increasingly stressed the critical role of Generic or Transferable Skills for future economic development. Work is now becoming less routine, with a requirement for flexibility, continuous learning, and individual initiative and judgement. All occupations are becoming more knowledge-intensive, with a corresponding rise in the requirement for qualifications and technical skills. Generic or transferable skills include the following:

  • Basic or fundamental skills such as literacy, numeracy, using technology
  • People-related skills such as communication, interpersonal skills, team working, customer service skills
  • Conceptual skills such as collecting and organising information, problem-solving, planning and organising, learning to learn, innovation and creativity

The AES provides a large range of courses from levels 1 - 6 which include these generic/transferable skills.
