Terry Byrne – Family Support Worker and Lifelong Learner
feature
Terry Byrne has come a long way since her return to education 17 years ago.

For Terry, who works as a Family Support Worker with NORTHSTAR family support project in Moyross, the biggest recent step in her lifelong learning journey was her participation in the Community Addiction Studies Course (CASC). The course is funded, organised and supported by Limerick City Adult Education Service.  Terry heard about the course through her work with young people, and was proud to receive her FETAC level 5 Component certificate in Addiction Studies in 2010.  The course is for Community members and professionals wishing to become more effective in their response to drug misuse and was a significant help to Terry, who described it as an important step in her learning journey, saying that “the learning was big for my personal development and my education”.

Terry left school early to go to work because that was ‘the thing to do’ in Ireland in the 1970s.  She worked for seven years, got married and then had to leave work because in those days women had to give up work when they got married.  For financial reasons, Terry went back to work after her third child was born.  She got a job at Limerick Youth Service and subsequently was placed on a FAS programme in Moyross. In 1991, she got involved as a Youth leader in Moyross, a role she is still involved in to this day.  She completed a Diploma in Youth and Community Work in 2008 which she describes as a real highlight; “It was always something that stood out for me and I was determined to do it.  The first night I went in to start the course, I was very nervous because it felt like going back to school; however, the group made me feel very comfortable and we all got on very well”.  Terry received her Diploma in Youth and Community Work in 2008.  “Going to Cork and putting on the cap and gown and going up on the stage to collect my Diploma was a great feeling, that’s a great achievement for someone who left school at 13”.
