An Adult Literacy Success Story

Paddy, left school at 11 years of age to work on the docks and as many of his generation he missed out on education from a young age.  “… I got little or no education as years went on in my life.. I worked in numerous places, that time you didn’t need to fill in forms for jobs, so we got away with it there, until I got a bit older and when you had to fill in forms, you got other people to do it for you..”.  Paddy took the opportunity to do something about his education and in 2006 he took up a place on a Return to Education programme with Limerick City Adult Education Service.

Paddy has steadily and successfully worked to improve his literacy and continues his learning journey with us today. More importantly perhaps, Paddy now acts as an ambassador to other potential learners in his community. He encourages and communicates the importance of education to others in ways that are relevant and meaningful.  In his own way, Paddy is helping to weave together the social fabric of his community and in a small way, helping to improve the overall social experiences in his area. Paddy now hopes to train as an adult literacy tutor and plans to be working as a tutor in his own community in the near future
